Popular American Sports

American football (not to be confused with football as understood in the rest of the world, which Americans call "soccer") is a rough, demanding game, requires special protective equipment and is too violent to play more than once a week. It is played in the fall and winter, by colleges (Saturdays) and professional teams (Sundays). At year end there are many college championship (or "bowl") games and one professional "Super-Bowl", the most widely watched television event in the country. Canadian football is similar to American football but teams from the two countries do not meet each other in competition. High school football leagues and rivalries cause great excitement as well.
